I have only discovered your podcast recently and have just finished catching up with it a couple of days ago. It was an amazing surprise to get this final episode now, it wrapped up the whole thing wonderfully for me. Needless to say, I enjoyed your podcast a lot, and I wish you both all the best in your future adventures!

  3. slashdogx Says:

I have not yet listened to the final episode, but thank you in advance for posting it. It was a very nice surprise to see it downloading. I was very glad I kept it on my ’subscribed’ list! Thanks again and for all your communication during that year.

  4. Corey Says:

Thanks for posting the conclusion. I was sure to stay subscribed in hopes that you would be back to let us know how things were going. I only wish you could do Another Year in Europe…I’d be sure to follow.

I’m very happy to hear things are going well for the two of you.

If you’ve got Ireland in your future, be sure to look me up.

  5. Michelle Says:

Thanks for the conclusion – It is so cool that you are now in Portland – we were just down there last week. We had voodoo donuts for lunch and Ethiopian food for dinner! If you have to eat donuts there is nothing better than a Bacon Maple Bar – yum.

The podcast ended with Scott in mid-sentence…? is there more?

    Cheers,
    Michelle – Seattle

  6. Scott Says:

Thanks Corey! We would love to visit Ireland and regret missing it on our trip. Let’s keep in touch.

  7. Scott Says:

Hi Michelle. Oh yes, we know Voodoo…! It sounds like you might want to re-download the podcast? The running time is 1:13:27 and it ends with a fade-out to our super-cool theme music ;-)

  8. Michelle Says:

Ahhh…that was it! I only had 42 minutes! I have never had to re-download a podcast before!!! Thanks! Have you had dinner at Blue Nile Cafe? It is a very small hole-in-the-wall Ethiopian restaurant – 2225 NE Broadway St – family run and wonderful! If you haven’t you must try it!

Do you guys get recognized on the street? If some strange woman runs up to you on the streets of Portland with a rather quiet British man trailing along behind her – don’t be alarmed – it may be me.

When you get to Seattle drop me line – we could meet you for lunch somewhere. Or at the very least I would recommend you take a picnic to the Ballard Locks…our favorite being jambon du beurre un baguette. You can pick one up in a French bakery called Le Panier at Pikes. http://www.lepanier.com/

    Thanks again
    -Michelle

I really enjoyed going on this jouney with the two of you. I have to admit, I’m a bit sad that it is over. You both did a wonderful job of detailing what you experienced and what moved you. I certainly was keeping notes about places to see and things to do. Maybe you should turn this whole podcast into a travel book.

You should go see Ireland. We were there last summer and it was amazing. In fact, we were getting ready to head home this time last year.

If you ever travel to Europe again (and why wouldn’t you?) I hope you’ll do more podcasting while you’re there.

  10. Cedar Says:

Nice conclusion to a great trip. Thanks for taking me along. Who knows when I’ll get to see Europe for my self. I can see why it took you a long time to finally post this episode. Waiting a year to post it is good in that we get to hear where you settled in the U.S.A. So my question is are you two going to continue to do podcasts? “A jaunt around Portland” perhaps?

  11. Jim Vancouver Says:

    Scott:
I fully understand you becoming “weepy” over Rick Steves. It has been a great pleasure in listening to your podcasts.

My wife and I have been to a number of the same places that you visited and I felt that we were revisiting those places.

Since we have been traveling to Europe it certainly broadens your perspective of life and a greater appreciation of other nationalities and cultures.

Sheryl, I am very glad that you overcame the unjustified criticism as it would have been our loss it you hadn’t continued. Scott, I do hope that a photo book does materialize it would be a fitting accompaniment to your podcasts.

    Once again thanks.

  12. Laura Collins Says:

I am so pleased that you have recorded a conclusion. I have not had a chance to listen, but will in the next day or so. I found you guys because I was looking for podcasts about Spain for an upcoming trip, but after listening to those I felt like you were new friends and I ended up listening to your entire year in Europe. I appreciate the good connection you have with each other – you clearly enjoy each other and that is inspiring. You have made me laugh and smile and anticipate the churros and chocolate I’ll have while in Spain this fall! I live near Portland and wonder if you might consider meeting for coffee with me and my husband before we take off to Spain in mid-September. It would be a pleasure to meet you but we would also enjoy the chance to gather additional insights that will help our trip be all we hope for.

  13. Laura Says:

I tried to post a comment yesterday but it didn’t show up so I’ll try again.
Just listened to your final podcast – thanks for the great summary of your year. I found you guys because I am preparing for a trip to Spain but after listening to the Spain podcasts I went ahead and listened to your whole trip because I was enjoying your trip so much and I felt like you had become friends. You did a wonderful job on these and listening to the two of you has been a delight. I listen while running at lunch time and when I get back to my desk I feel as if I have had a mini-vacation. Thanks.
I live near Portland and wonder if you might consider getting together for coffee in the coming weeks so that my husband and I can get insights from you about our upcoming month in Spain. By the way, welcome to the northwest! If you survived this past winter you will be fine here because it was truly a miserable, depressing, endless time of rain and cold and gray and yuck!
    Cheers-
    Laura

    Dear Sheryl & Scott,

Thank you for your great podcasts! I cannot tell you how much I’ve enjoyed them. I was so sad to hear that this podcast was the last one! You two seem to have such a great relationship…you know you guys need to start your own dating website for people interested in european travel. Perhaps it can lead to a huge influx of couples into Europe spending a year of their life dedicated to travel and each other. Sounds good to me!

    Thanks again!!!
    -Andrea

  15. Scott Says:

Thanks everyone for your comments! Sorry it took so long to post, but we’re getting hit pretty hard with spam lately…

  16. Julie Says:

Hi, I’ve recently discovered your podcasts, and i’m enjoying it soooo much…
…..guess what, in South Korea! :)
I think your ideas inspire people through out the world, honestly.
I’m catching up one by one-
    Thank you+ welcome home now~

I discovered your podcast on Zune Marketplace when I purchased my Zune. It was great to hear about your experiences in Paris and London as I could compare them with mine when I was there. Took me right back and I’ve got a few more places to see on my next trip! You also changed my mind about visiting Spain which I previously had no interest in and made me feel good about my decision to see Berlin. But the best thing about your podcasts was sharing your perspective as fellow tourists instead of tour operators or tour guides which set you apart from anything else I’ve seen, heard or read. In depth and personal with your great sense of humor, it made my drive to work each day for over a month (I downloaded them all at once) the best. And also having grown up in San Jose, I could share your perspective of the differences between here and there. You must know you’ve made a lot of friends who wish you well in the future. Somebody should be paying you to do this again and I’ll be recommending your podcasts to all of my traveling family and friends.

I wish you the best in your new journey in Portland. What a great place to end up.

  18. Greg Says:

I wanted to thank you for an entertaining and interesting podcast. I came across your podcast on iTunes in early Feb of 2007. At the time, you were in Spain, and I was planning my trip to Barcelona. I started there and listened to your podcasts in some sort of ‘not even close to’ chronilogical order. I jumped back and forth between regions that I was interested in. And as the year wore on, I filled in all the gaps by listening to the remain podcasts in some sort of vaguely reverse order. It made for some very amusing juxtapositions like Episode 37 “We went to Euro Disney” which I followed by listening to one of your very first episodes where you contemplated actually going there.

At any rate, I enjoyed your impressions of places near and far. Even though I had a good chuckle over poor Scott getting stuck in the elevator (in Switzerland?), I have to admit that I’ll miss your adventures and the hope that you’ll keep us updated on your next travels.

    Thanks for a great year.

  19. DPJ Says:

Fantastic podcast !! been a fan since you started. i than you guys for doin this and giving an amazing picture of your travels. It is tremendous that you pulled this off !!

    Good luck in Portland!

A Year in Asia next? haha

I must have just downloaded your podcast a few days after this final posting – I was looking for travel podcasts to listen to while on vacation. You guys are great, the podcast was great, and I’m so happy you were able to share it with us. It really made me appreciate traditional Europe – I always thought if I had a year to travel I’d go the more exotic route, but honestly after hearing your experiences I know I’d be missing out. Thanks again!

    Scott and Sheryl:

I discovered your podcast about a year ago while planning a trip with my mom to Paris and Rome. After downloading the Paris and Rome episodes, I was hooked, and ended up listening to your entire trip before we left for Europe. I was so excited to see your conclusion episode. Thanks so much for wrapping it all up for us. I have often wondered how you two made out upon your return to the States.

Just wanted to let you know how helpful the podcast was for me. After hearing of your fantastic (and less expensive) experiences renting apartments during your stay, I looked into it and did the same in both cities, and was very happy with that. I could not help but remember Scott’s issues with the Vatican Museum, and used that information to book a tour, which allowed us to avoid many of the lines and bad experiences you had there. So, thanks for those ideas.

Finally, I am now at the stage of sort of wistfully recalling our trip, so I completely understand how you felt. I really enjoyed recalling not only your visits, but mine, as well.

Good luck to you both, and please consider traveling some more. We would love to hear all about it! :)

  22. Sue Says:

We’re posted in Paris and discovered your podcasts last Spring. I listened to all of them in sequence, and have been replaying particular ones before or after we visit many of the same destinations. I appreciate your humor, insights, information on each place you visited; it’s a fun addition to our own travels.

Please post more on any future travels. You are both such talented commentators, I’d listen to you narrate a trip to your local fish market!

  23. Ruth Says:

Hi. I have just discovered your podcasts on ITunes and then your blog. I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed hearing about your trip and your comments about your experience. It does remind me of the 3 week trip I took with my sister and inspires me to plan more trips. Thanks.

  24. Claire Says:

    Hi Scott and Sheryl,
I listened to your conclusion today for the second time. In fact, I’ve listened to your entire podcast 3 times and plan to listen again when we are in Europe for a year next year. You two are just the best. Interesting, funny, informative and natural. You should have your own radio travel show–I’m serious. You get weepy over Rick Steves, I get weepy when I come to the end of your podcasts. I hope the podcast stays up! I’ll need to re-download them all onto a new laptop next year.

  25. Robert Morales Says:

    Hello Scott and Sheryl,

I have enjoyed listening to your podcast tremendously. I am still by Rome, by the way, and with each episode it gets better and better. You dialogue and interaction improves with each episode, and with background sounds it almost feels like being there. I look forward to finishing listening to the rest of the episode and hope you guys do more in the future. Maybe not a year but how about a month in South America. You have been, in part, the inspiration for my traveling podcast @ http://www.wetravl.com
Thank you for your most informative and entertaining show, and hope to hear about your future travels soon.

    Robert

  26. Brad Says:

    Scott & Sheryl,
After following you all through your YIE I had really hoped for an episode like this. I checked your website for several months and then kind of forgot about it. I just thought to check again and was so pleased to find this! It was great to hear about your re acclimation to life in America. I lived in Portland for a couple of years while I attended grad school. I agree with all you said about it. It’s a great city, and if you can survive the gray winters, the summers are spectacular.

I appreciated the wrap up you provided with your “best of” lists. You have always been pretty candid about what you like and don’t like though you also seem to try to maintain a generally positive tone. I agree with other commentors that you seriously would make good virtual tour guides if it would ever work to do additional traveling and continue with your podcasting. (I guess that will have to wait for a while though, as I read your good news about expecting twins. Congratulations! Perhaps you can continue podcasting your adventures as new parents!)

I’d like to sincerely thank you for the hours of enjoyment I’ve had as I followed your journeys around Europe. If you do offer a CD with your collected podcasts I’d gladly pay for a copy.

Thanks again, and good luck in all you pursue.

    –Brad Mortensen
